About the GPC Chamber Singers
The Grand Philharmonic Chamber Singers is an auditioned SATB ensemble of about 30 singers, drawn from the ranks of the larger Grand Philharmonic Choir. These singers perform with the full choir, and they also present two additional concerts a year as part of the season.
Concerts presented by the Chamber Singers offer an intimate experience in a smaller venue. These concerts explore innovative new works and beautiful choral classics, encompassing the entire musical spectrum from the European Renaissance to works by contemporary composers.
Led and conducted by Grand Philharmonic Choir artistic director Mark Vuorinen, the Chamber Singers have recently performed: the Fauré Requiem (2024); Annelies, a setting of the diary of Anne Frank, by the late James Whitbourn (2023 and 2016, which was the Canadian premiere); the Duruflé Requiem (2022); Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri (2020); and Considering Matthew Shepard by Craig Hella Johnson (2018).
The singers gave the world premiere of Sonnet 18 by contemporary Quebec composer, Rémi St-Jacques, in 2019, and have also performed many works by other contemporary composers, including Sarah Quartel, Caleb Burhans, Ola Gjeilo, Tracy Wong, and Ēriks Ešenvalds.
In June 2015, the Chamber Singers performed as guest artists in R. Murray Schafer’s monumental work Apocalypsis, at the Luminato Festival in Toronto.
